The Lafayette Parish Communication District is a stand-alone, public safety communications agency created in 1979 by an act of the Louisiana State Legislature for the purpose of implementing and administering an emergency 911 telephone system, as well as other public safety communications system improvements for all of Lafayette Parish.
The agency went online in 1982 as the first 911 center in the State of Louisiana.
The District primarily provides call taking services, entering calls for services into a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system. CAD information is then sent electronically to police, fire, and ambulance agencies responsible for dispatching their own resources. Another function of the agency is to maintain public safety communications systems (e.g. CAD, radio infrastructure, automatic vehicle location, mobile data terminals) used by the police, fire, and emergency medical service agencies operating within Lafayette Parish.
